GRANTS IN ACTION: Increasing Technological Capacity for Museum Programs
With the support of a 2025 Spring Community Grant from Community Foundation Grey Bruce, the Community Waterfront Heritage Centre completed its Increasing Technological Capacity for Museum Programs project. By acquiring new computer equipment and expanding collections research, the museum strengthened its ability to document, interpret, and share local history with visitors and the broader community. The project focused on improving the museum's capacity to research and manage its collection of artifacts, photographs, and archival records. Using newly acquired computers, museum staff, volunteers, and summer students reviewed existing records, identified gaps in collection information, and conducted research into artifacts with untold stories.
This work led to the correction of mislabeled artifacts, the identification of previously overlooked historical information, and the development of new interpretive content for visitors. Research efforts supported two key initiatives: the creation of the museum's new Hidden Gems Exhibit and the development of gallery guides to provide information about artifacts that could not easily be labeled within exhibit spaces.
The research completed through the project resulted in several new resources for visitors, including exhibit content, printed gallery guides, and online information that expands on stories shared within the museum. The online gallery guide extensions allow visitors and researchers to access additional details that would not fit within traditional exhibit displays. The Hidden Gems Exhibit was designed as a rotating display, allowing the museum to regularly feature different artifacts from its collection rather than showcasing a single group of objects. This approach enables more collection items to be shared with the public and provides opportunities to incorporate new discoveries as research continues.
Research conducted through the project also supported the development of a new museum tour launched during the summer of 2025 and uncovered historical records that may contribute to future exhibits focused on the Hindman Transportation Company, a frequent topic of public inquiry. The project gave visitors a new perspective on the work involved in preserving and interpreting local history:

By increasing its technological capacity and expanding collections research, the Community Waterfront Heritage Centre has strengthened its ability to preserve and share Grey Bruce's history. The project improved access to information, enhanced the visitor experience, and created new opportunities for learning through exhibits, research, and educational resources. As research continues and new artifacts are added to the Hidden Gems Exhibit, visitors will have even more opportunities to discover the stories that help shape the region's heritage.
